Zogby Interactive: High Speed Internet Tops Other Technologies as Most Impactful Development of Past Decade

A Zogby International interactive survey finds adults agree that the expansion of high speed internet has had the greatest technological impact on society over the past decade, and it is the technology most believe they cannot live without. The poll of 1,950 adults was conducted from Dec. 8 - Dec. 10, 2010.

Facebook came in a close second (22%) to high speed internet (24%) as the technology having the most impact on society over the past decade. Google was third on that list with 10%. Women (27%) and adults under the age of 55 find Facebook the most impactful while men (27%) and those over 55 say high speed internet has had the greatest impact on society. Adults aged 35-54 are split between Facebook (25%) and high speed internet (24%). Young adults, aged 18-24, find Google (25%) as the second most impactful invention of the past decade, with Facebook (28%) being first.

Of the technologies most say they cannot live without, high speed internet comes in first at 28% and email is the second at 18%. Facebook garnered only 3% among all adults. However, 15% of young adults (aged 18-24) say they cannot live without Facebook.

The complete survey results are here.

Bluetooth Modem

When no other means of connecting to the Internet is available, mobile workers can use their Bluetooth enabled cell phone as a modem.
An advantage to using Bluetooth is that your phone can remain in your laptop carrying case or pocket and Bluetooth does not require direct line of sight connection.
If your laptop is not already Bluetooth enabled, you can purchase a USB Bluetooth adapter.

Here's How:

1. Turn on the Bluetooth enabled cell phone and turn on the Bluetooth connection software.
2. Make the phone discoverable.
3. In Windows XP on the laptop go to My Bluetooth Places.
4. Select View Devices in Range.
5. After the discovery process is complete, you should see the icon for the cell phone.
6. Right-click on the icon and select Discover Available Services.
7. To connect to your cell phone right-click on the Dial-Up Networking.
8. Select Connect Dial-up networking.
9. The phone will ask if you want to accept the connection request, decline or add to paired.
10. The last step pairs the phone and laptop and performs the connection request.
11. You will be prompted to enter a PIN code to pair up the devices, the PIN is entered in the cell phone.
12. A dialogue box appears asking for user name, password and the phone number of your ISP.
13. Click on the dial button to complete the connection.

Tips:

1. To find the devices in range you can click the Bluetooth menu and select "search for devices" or open Entire Bluetooth Neighborhood and press F5.
2. Pairing a phone and laptop will ensure the connection can be established whenever you require it and you don’t have to go through the set-up process each time. If you do not pair the two devices, you will have to make the phone discoverable each time.

What You Need:

* Bluetooth enabled cell phone
* Bluetooth enabled laptop

If you're paying 1536 credits or more to run an ad on an EC network blog, you're probably paying too much! Before you go wasting your ecs, GO HERE TO check the blog's Alexa and Google rankings!

Find some interesting blogs on EC and enter their URLS. YOU WILL BE AMAZED! We ran an ad that cost 2048 credits on one blog and another that cost 64 credits. The 64 credit advert got over 175 hits! The one on the 2048 blog got just three! The difference? The 64 credit blog had a PR3 and a low Alexa number. The 2048 blog had PR0 and on eof the highest Alexa numbers we'd ever seen!

Snooki Sex Tape

I've just "reserved" a place on search engines by using what I call a "keyword headline" that will attract visitors to this blog for days, weeks, months - even years - to come, whether or not a "Snooki Sex Tape" ever exists!

When you create a truly excellent post, the very first thing you should do is "test" your title: the name you give to your post can make a world of difference later on! HOw do you test it? Go to google. Now look at your post. What is it about, who is it about, and what do you think the majority of people who search for infromation about that particular person or topic are going to be looking for, i.e., how will they phrase that search? Perhaps others have already been looking for it. Google's "preview" will give you a list that should be a good indicator of what you want your post title to include. Now, follow through. Look and see what some of those searches produce. Take it a step further by going to blogsearch.google.com, click on "Search by date" and see if any other bloggers have written about your topic in the last 48 hours. Next stop: www.google.com/trends to see if any keywords from your post appear on the hotlist (or if there are any words you can add to your post to make it fall in line with the hotlist!)

I discovered an article that takes through all of the remaining steps. Although it appears to be aimed at new websites rather than individual posts on existing blogs, the advice it gives is well worth following. IT IS HERE. Good Luck, and please comment back to let me know if you decide to apply these techniques and if they do indeed work for you!

Always Have A 'Plan B'

I have always been an advocate of "duplicate services" - for example, I'm on MySpace AND Facebook - and right now, FB has a big edge over MySpace. I use two comment services - Haloscan AND the standard Blogger.com comments. (You can also comment on this weblog via C-Box). I offer interactive contact via MyBlogLog AND via Google Friend Connect.

Beginning today, I'm "tweeting" via twitter AND FriendFeed AND just by using blogger.com's SMS services. With three ways of bouncing my thoughts into the "lifestream" of things, I'll not worry should any one service temporarily go down or decide to "suspend" me!

The ball is in YOUR court. Take a look at the tools you use within the context of your personal online activities. Take the ones that are most valuable and dear to you and find back-ups.

Are you on MySpace? Open a Facebook account. Are you trying to network through Facebook? Open a Linked In account. On twitter? Open a FriendFeed account. Are you blogging? Open up a "back-up" blog via a different blog services provider. Don't "cross-post" - upload original material (you don't need to update as frequently as your "main" blog, but keep the service up, running and open - just in case "something" happens!

Get the idea? Establish your web presence across multiple services. That way YOU will be less likely to panic or break down when one of those services goes down!

Blog Building Blocks » Back Links

If you think PageRank is everything, you're WRONG! "If you link to interesting articles on other blogs, they will link back to interesting articles that you have. Bloggers usually check their site stats every 30 seconds, they’ll see that you have linked to them. (It’s an addiction!) Many people don’t want to link out because it spreads their pagerank thin. Would you rather have pagerank or money? I, personally would rather have money. Pagerank will come. It won’t do you any good to have high pagerank if you don’t have any traffic, and most people don’t realize that the two aren’t as tied together as it seems." ~ The Ad Master

Beware of Certain Entrecard & Adgitize Badge-Bearing Blogs

There are some blogs in the Entrecard and Adgitize programs that harbor dangerous virus and trojans. You may have seen the warning that Google sometimes places with a selection that the website may not be safe? Well, that warning does NOT appear on these renegade blogs, when you Google them.

I ran across one written by a well-known "troublemaker" in both Adg & EC. Once you're on his blog a program secretly downloads onto your computer and installs an "Anti Virus" program. A small icon may or may not appear on your toolbar. It will sit quietly, until you activate it by going to one of his other blogs! Here's what to do: hit ctrl+alt+delete and on your task manager simply kill firefox.exe or explorer or whatever your browser is. Don't go back to that blog! Other blogs leave a cookie on your PC so that if you re-visit them, a trojan silently loads on your computer! BE CAREFUL! These are trusted blogs that have been around for awhile. Sorry, can't name names, but if you're smart you'll figure it out!.

How to Implement Layered Security for Your Computer

Layer 1 is a personal firewall. A personal firewall is a software program installed on your computer that controls access to everything that enters or attempts to leave your computer. Think of it as having your own personal security guard at your house and he asks you for permission to let anyone enter the house or leave the house. You can purchase a firewall for under $50 but you can get some excellent firewalls free. I personally like the Comodo Personal Firewall or the Zone Alarm firewall.

Layer 2 is antivirus software. Antivirus software is another program installed on your computer that inspects the data on your computer for viruses, trojans and keyloggers. It does this by comparing the files on your computer with a known list of bad software aka signatures. The antivirus program also inspects data entering and leaving your computer, checks for virus signatures or uses an algorithm to detect suspicious data packets. You can purchase antivirus software, but again you can also get some very good antivirus programs for free. I like Avira Antivirus and Avast Antivirus. Don't use AVG Free, the free version does not offer "rootkit" protection which is a very common area of exploitation.

Layer 3 is protection from Spyware, Malware and Adware. These programs inspect data entering and leaving your computer and checks for known bad software signatures. If you are using Windows XP or Vista, then you are already running Windows Defender and are covered. If you would like additional protection you can download free programs such Adaware, Spybot Search & Destroy and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Layer 4 is to make sure you are running Windows update on a weekly basis to ensure you have the latest security patches for your operating system. You must also check for weekly updates on each of the products you installed in the previous three layers. Most programs have a scheduling option so you can set it and forget it.

Layer 5 is scanning. You must ensure each of the products installed in the first three layers run a scan weekly. Again, most programs have a scheduling option so you can set it and forget it.

Layer 6 is passwords. All security threats don't necessarily come from the internet. Make sure the password you use to log on to your computer is not an easy one to figure out. Make sure the password contains a mix of upper and lower case letters, at least one number and a special character such as !, #, &,_ or *. Do not use your computer password for any online programs such as email, Facebook, bank accounts, etc... And if you use your computer in public places like a library or coffee shop, you will need to change it often. You would be surprised how many passwords and pin numbers get intercepted by bad guys looking over your shoulder.

Welcome To The Blog-O-Smear!

ALL BLOGGERS. Yup! All of us... we have been desecrated by a fellow named Daniel Cho who writes for SmartMoney.com.

10 Things Your Blogger Won't Tell You

1. "Hardly anybody reads me." - Google CEO Eric Schmidt told a recent gathering of U.K. politicians that the average blog has just one reader: the blogger.

2. "The more companies pay me, the more I like their stuff." - In 2006, Florida outfit PayPerPost sparked controversy by offering to connect advertisers with bloggers willing to drop a company's name into their daily scribbles for a fee (between $4 and $40 per mention). The practice was quickly denounced as online payola, and in December, the Federal Trade Commission weighed in, ruling that word-of-mouth marketers must disclose their sponsorship.

3. "Did I mention I'm not a real reporter?" - Cho blasts bloggers for not being journalists! Go figure!

4. "I might infect your computer with a virus." - Cho gets dirty now, accusing bloggers of having virusses in their blogs and springing them on unsuspecting readers!

5. "I'm revealing company secrets." - Cho tries to make life rougher for bloggers by screaming like a chicken little that all bloggers will rat out their employers. This is simply not true! (He goes on to suggest they blog anonymously!)

6. "Just because my name's on it doesn't mean I wrote it." - here Cho tears apart CEO's: "In 2005 New York City mayoral candidate Fernando Ferrer's web log mentioned he'd attended public schools; in fact, Ferrer received most of his education in private Catholic schools. When confronted with the error, his campaign admitted the blog was written by a staffer. Ferrer's predicament was hardly unusual: Politicians, business leaders and other public figures routinely employ ghostwriters to produce books, speeches and, more recently, blogs. One survey conducted by PR consultant David Davis found that only 17% of CEOs who blog do all their own writing."

7. "My blog is just a stepping stone to bigger and better things." - this conflicts with #1, doesn't it? Cho writes "In some blogging circles, scorn for the mainstream media, or "MSM," is a virtual religion. Nonetheless, many bloggers have proven eager to join it when the opportunity arises. Melissa Lafsky, author of the popular Opinionistas blog, was stressed and unhappy as a young lawyer in New York City. As a kind of therapy, she began chronicling daily life at her firm, relating tales of tyrannical partners and sleepless, embittered young associates, being careful not to reveal her identity. Her blog soon built a following, gaining mentions in The New York Times and Slate.com. Eventually, a literary agent came calling, and Lafsky quit her job to write professionally. "

8. "I can control what you see on the Internet." - Cho accuses bloggers of manipulating posts to fool search engines.

9. "Blogging just about ruined my life." Another conflict with #1

10. "I'm already obsolete." Cho infers blogging is a dying art.

Better title for Cho's article: "10 Reasons not to believe anything you read on SmartMoney.com."

Get FREE Twitter Followers!

Many netizens when first signing on with twitter are anxious to get going and subsequently make mistakes. One of the biggest you can make is following too many people, with not enough following you back!

One of your first inclinations (after searching for "twitter followers" only to find you have to PAY for them) might be to Google "free twitter followers" or "get free twitter followers" - I already did it for you with the following results :::

Ripped from GOOGLE:

  1. Get more Twitter Followers with TwitterFollower.com - Join now for ...

Twitter Follower is a service that connects you with Twitter users who will follow you back when you follow them, helping you to increase your follower ...
    www.myfollowfriends.com/ - Cached
  2. Get Twitter More Twitter Followers For FREE

Grow your twitter followers for free. Just Sign In To Get Started! ... TwitterFollowersFree.com is Not Affiliated With OR Endorsed By Twitter.com.
    www.twitterfollowersfree.com/ - Cached
  3. Get Unlimited Twitter Followers For Free - GreedyTweet.com

GreedyTweet gives you Unlimited, Targeted, Free twitter followers at no cost whatsoever.
    www.greedytweet.com/ - Cached - Similar

(1) - Alarm Bells at StartUp Screen ::: "Twitter Follower - One of the best methods to get more followers, make money online" - there's a box where one must "register" one's name and email addy. There's a video that tries to load, and , because I am trying to access these sites via dialup, I can't get past the opening screen.

(2) - EXTRA LOUD ALARM BELLS - this site wants my twitter name and password. No way, Jose!

(3) - This seems better - "Username = Twitter username. Password: non-Twitter for security." So far, so good. But then I read this: "Only your Twitter username is needed; your Twitter password should NOT be used to signup. Contact us to delete your account.

Our software will detect if someone removes themselves from your follow list (waits to unfollow you after you follow them) and stop you from following them preventing spam accounts from simply adding you to their spam list. This doesn't mean you will be removed from following people who don't follow you. You can still follow whoever you like, whether they follow you back or not, it simply removes those that stop following you."

STOP RIGHT THERE. In the past I've signed up for things online that I regretted later - things that made changes to other things that could not be undone.

So what's the best way to get FREE TWITTER FOLLOWERS? e-mail your friends, colleageus, old classmates and let them know you are on twitter. Splash your twitter handle on your blog or website and your social network of choice, be it Facebook, Foursquare, LinkedIn, hi5, WHATEVER! You might also want to include something like "Follow Me on Twitter! http://twitter.com/yourtwitternamehere" as an e-mail (and possibly cell-phone SMS) signature! You can also tweet like a SuperStar - that'll help a lot!

Quicker Browsing

Would you like to have a no-frills browser to speed up the content while online? Not for dropping EC's or clicking on adgitize ads, but just for research and gathering info? There are a couple of old browsers still around that may be of some help. I recommend you download and save copies of BOTH while they are still available!

The first is "Off By One" browser. Would you like to absolutely blaze thru Google searches (including image searches)? Go to offbyone.com and download the wonderful little "Off By One" browser. It is a thoroughly independent online/offline Web browser that loads and runs quickly and reliably on all Windows systems.

I open it up when I want to look thru a webpage or blog QUICKLY, without waiting for all the bells and whistles to load in Firefox, Chrome or IE. OffByOne is a secure browser that protects your identity when browsing and leaves no track of where you've been. Best of all, there are no pop-up, pop-over or pop-under advertising windows. OffByOne browser can run directly from a floppy, CD, ZIP etc. without installation. It hasn't been updated in awhile, but I think EVERY blogger should have one!

Off By One Browser Features (taken from its homepage)
1) Implements full HTML 3.2 support plus many HTML 4.0 extensions, including Frames.

2) Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) support provided by optional OpenSSL libraries for secure navigation to https:// addresses.

3) Incorporates a tabbed browsing interface.

4) Extras include image animation, WAV and AVI playback and the ability to automatically launch external applications for file types that are not supported internally.

5) Packaged in one self-contained 1.2 MB application. Can be compressed down to about 460KB for distribution.

6) Completely self-contained, does not require the presence of any other browser.

7) Does not require any installation, browser can be run directly from a CD or over a network.

8) Has a unique Find-In-Files feature that can search the non-tag text of multiple HTML files.

9) Has a unique image zoom option.

Off By One Browser Limitations
No JavaScript support (so no pop-up ad windows)... No applet, plug-in or Flash support.

The second browser is called Lynx. Lynx is a text only browser. Version v283 is available as a FREE, quick download as it does everything you'll need, and more importantly doesn't do anything a search engine spider can't do. This particular version of Lynx should work in most versions of Windows NT, 95, 98, ME, 2K, XP, and Vista.

Most people are able to get Lynx up and running after thoroughly reading the instructions below. Sorry, I can't offer installation support - I just don't get time to answer emails these days.

Installation Instructions
Read the 'readme.txt' and other help files included in the package for more information.

Make a folder on the top level of your C drive called lynx_w32
Unzip the contents of the lynx_v283.zip file into that folder.
Make a shortcut to lynx.bat* and place it on your desktop.
Double click the shortcut. Lynx will open with google.com as the home page.
*Can't find lynx.bat? In Windows Explorer try selecting the tools option at the top of the window, then select Folder Options. Click the "view" tab, then un-check the box for "hide extensions for known file types".

FamousBloggers.net Hear Me Out

Guest post by Ms. Pilar Tiang
Speaking
Writing Typing as a veteran internet user (1989) and blogger (2003), trying not to be disrectful, cynical or off-the-map critical: FamousBloggers.net is more accurately named FamousBloggers.NOT. Please hear me out and I will explain why.

Posts on the FamousBloggers blog purporting to give tips and advice border on the absurd. They are ridiculous. They might have made more sense, perhaps, in 2005. And the commenters! Did they just ascend from apes? Were they "born yesterday" - or - freshly hatched? Some I reckon are newbies who have never been on the internet before. Others are downright delusional and cannot spell simple English words. Yet they look up to the FamousBloggers as if they were gifts from the gods.

Let me make one thing perfectly transparent - I am not, have not been, and probably never will be one of the "A-List" bloggers, that "cream of the crop" group dating from 2004 who just happened to set up their little digital outposts ahead of the crowd. Once firmly established, they wrote the "rules" and set the standards, shutting the digital doors on everybody else.

In my eyes, the ProBloggers.net crowd is a microcosm of pop society. Well-intentioned, wonderful people but misguided netizens. And they remind me of the "MySpace crowd" that completely screwed up the blogosphere when the up-until-then wonderful Technorati declared circa 2005-6 that "MySpace Pages" were blogs, when in fact, they were not. Had T'rati not made that particular blunder, they'd be right up there with Google, YouTube and Twitter today. But they did. And there's no going back in Cyberspace. That's a post for another day.

You may be familiar with the old saying "once bitten, twice shy" - I am not trying to insult or injure you FamousBloggers.Netters. You blokes are simply on a different plane of cyber-existence than myself and millions of other netizens. Think of the way human societies developed over the ages on different continents. Look back to the year of 1800. Compare western society at that time with China, India, Africa. Different people, developing their own unique cultures with particular laws or rules and traditions. You FamousBloggers are rookies, newbies, the "wet behind the ears" minor-league farm team, but that doesn't for one minute mean you are any less than any one of those mighty A-List Bloggers! I say, "More Power To You!"

Your timeline is different than mine. That's no reason we cannot co-exist as digital neighbors. And KNOW THIS: 10, 15, maybe 20 years from today, you blokes will be scratching YOUR heads over the next wave, the next generation of bloggers or tweeters or social networkers or netizens or whatever name they will be tagged with by that time. You will likely be amazed and at the same time disillusioned by the technology they employ to connect online.

When you are there, and when the moment is just right, you'll remember this article. And you will understand why I wrote it.

HELP! My Blog Traffic is Dropping!

All of a sudden, you have noticed a drop in traffic to your blog. Something wrong iwth sitemeter? Google suddenly ignoring you? Don't despair!

Begin with the basics:
- Check your error logs, although every time you visit it looks like everything is fine but is it dying when you aren't looking? This is probably the most significant one.

- check RBL/blacklists, see if you've been reported for any reason.

- Run a DNS report on your site: it's entirely possible your host has made a DNS change and something may be hosed up.

- Solicit feedback from your readers: Try to discover if visitors trying to get to your blog are having trouble. It could be anything from a AVG upgrade to a browser upgrade that may be errantly blocking or reporting your site in some way.

If it's all good, it might be that all you can do is wait it out. Traffic drops can affect any blog, any time!

In the meantime:

Keep updating your blog, leave some comments on other blogs, engage in social networking... yes, these activities take time but they are well worth it! Don’t let stress bust you. Sometimes, a walk in a starry evening could evaporate all your worries and stresses in life. Take time to enjoy little things that life may offe

When your traffic is down, keep on typing ;)

Let Liane Critique Your Blog!

If I Can Tell You What's Wrong, Can You Do What's Right? Blog Critiquing By Liane

Written by Liane. Get more blogging tips. Subscribe to this blog today!

Opening up a featured service, by Liane of Better Blogging for Bloggers.

Partly my fault. I have opened up to blog coaching quite a while ago but I never really gave this area much of an attention. Shame. And I promised to help other bloggers. Now, I'll be setting my little record straight. But wait, I figured out that blog coaching takes an awful long time, and I am sure you want solutions right now. Right?

So I started to think, how can I train a blogger without the need of blog coaching but still get the same or even better results at a faster time? I finally figured out a solution. It was so simple yet so unheard of, but I'm willing to bet it would work wonders. The solution? Let me critique your blog.

Are are you the frustrated blogger?
♦ You've been blogging for so long yet you find it hard to break in to your niche
♦ You've read all the blogging tips ebook yet can't find the perfect formula
♦ You've been through some "purchasing accidents" and didn't even make your money's worth
♦ You've drowned yourself on the internet but to no success
♦ You've been wanting to change all that just just CAN'T

Why many methods don't just work
The problem with other blogging ebooks and training program's is that they are CHEATING on you. Why?

Because every time you get to read a copy, or receive a training method, thousands of other bloggers are getting THE SAME thing.

Yes, they might be telling you that you're going to receive your UNFAIR advantage, but in reality, everyone is receiving the same unfair advantage. In the end, EVERYONE KNOWS THE SAME TRICKS. People come to a dead lock where' they got similar knowledges and ideas that you turn out to be a replicate of the others.

I have heard many bloggers who wants to break in to the success level by enrolling themselves on all kinds of programs, that in the end, would just usually be not beneficial in the long run.

Here are the usual reasons:

♦ Ebooks and traning programs are all pre-written, meaning they don't cater directly to your needs but to the general needs.
♦ Most of them are just products of hyped-up sensational marketing. Their main target? Your money.
♦ Yes, they might be giving you their methods but afterwards, you're left all alone
♦ You've just been reading about the same thing all over again.

What's the point in paying for things you already know? I say, forget about high-priced trainings, forget about yet another ebook, and most of all, forget signing up to some random newsletter in a vain attempt to get something while actually falling again on a marketer's trap.
