Tools for telephone encryption:
  • Redphone protects your phone conversation so no one can listen in on either end. It’s a free app for Android that uses WiFi or data to run on your mobile device.
  • Created by the Guardian Project, OStel encrypts voice and video conversations. You can sign up to download the app on almost any device, including Apple, Android, Nokia, Windows and Blackberry products. OStel is also seen as a more secure alternative to Skype.

  • Adium is a free download that connects Mac users to instant messaging services similar to AIM, MSN, Jabber and Yahoo so that no one can read your messages. Pidgin does the same for Windows.

Invalid Certificate Maxthon Browser

I love the Maxthon except when I go to major sites like facebook and twitter, the "Invalid certificate" box pops up. It's a pain in the ass to click it every single time. I did a lot of googling and found this to be an ongoing problem, which Maxthon doesn't answer.

A lot of folks posed the question on forums, usually advised to "get the latest version of Maxthon," which they already have...

 I even stopped by a Maxthon forum, and here's what happened:

What to Blog About.What to blog about? That’s a question that many people have when they decide they’re going to get into the online pastime. You may have spent hours looking through others’ blogs and websites, found lists of hundreds of ideas for topics, and still found that you’re asking yourself the same question.
The truth is you don’t need ideas. You need tips on choosing your own topics to blog about.

It Depends on Your Goal

Before you even think about choosing a blogging topic, you need to think about the goal for your blog. What do you really want to achieve? Is it to sell an affiliate product? Maybe you want to showcase your skills as a writer. You may even want to offer tips and advice to others on a particular subject. There is no wrong or right answer when it comes to your blogging goals. They are personal to you and depend on the things that drive and interest you.
If you are promoting a product or service, you would need to cover the benefits, comparisons with others and your personal reviews of using it. However, when you’re showcasing your writing talents, you can cover a wider range of topics to do this.

Write About Your Passion

When creating a blog and starting out writing, you need to enjoy what you’re doing. So, when you’re thinking “what to blog about,” you need to think about what you love to do or what you have a passion for. It could be about anything that you enjoy—chances are someone else in the world enjoys it too. If you love reading, write reviews about the books you read. Photographers will offer tips and advice, along with photos that they have taken.
Writing about your passion will mean you never run out of ideas. A good blog is updated regularly—at least once a week—as it keeps people interested and gives fresh content for the search engines to log. By writing about something you enjoy, you won’t get bored or feel annoyed that it’s time to update it yet again.
The passion will also show in your writing. Readers will see that you love the topic, constantly have fresh ideas and really want to help them. It encourages them to come back and read more—and they may even subscribe to your blog to get your updates.
It’s really common for people to pick a topic that others make money from in the hope they too can make some money. Although the reality is it isn’t actually the topic that makes money, but your passion and the readers’ engagement in the posts that make a blog successful.

Write for Your Readers

When you’re blogging for money, you need to keep your readers coming and encourage them to buy your products or services. You need to give them a reason to click your affiliate links and buy the products or sign up to a website. The best way to do that is write specifically for them.
Think about the type of problems your readers have within your topic of expertise. Is there a common question you find unanswered online? Maybe the answers you find are wrong or misleading. Create a blog post that covers that question and gives the reader clear, honest and correct answers. You will also find that those answers bring up some other questions, so you can create follow up posts.
If your readers learn something new or get the answers to their questions, they will come back for more. More than that, they will share your posts with their friends, which boosts your readership further and boosts your position in the search engines.

Discuss and Debate with Your Readers

When you’re really not sure what to blog about, think about the type of posts that will create conversations with your readers. You want them to comment with questions, their opinions and encourage others to jump in. To do this you need to create posts that offer the ability to discuss or debate a topic. It could be a recent controversial news topic where you offer your point of view or it could be your way of solving the nation’s debt crisis (just as examples).
You will need to be careful with this method. Posts like this can come across as volatile and purposely pushing buttons. You will also receive comments from readers who like to push others’ buttons and cause debates; known as trolls. It is up to you to determine those who are getting into a healthy debate and those you need to delete and ban because of the hurtful nature. It is also best to stay away from topics that you’re sensitive about.

Keep It Focused

Finally, make sure your blog is focused. Pick one topic and stick to it. The trick is to find ways that another topic will link to yours, so you constantly have something new and interesting to share.
Focused blogs are successful because readers know what to expect. They’re more likely to subscribe and check back when you have new posts. If you’re all over the place, you can’t target to a specific audience. It may seem like you have more readers, but those reading about last week’s topic may have no interest in this week’s topic and decide never to come back.
If you have multiple passions, create multiple blogs and set up a schedule to add fresh content to each blog. Although it’s probably best to start with one blog and build up the passion for it. The more passion you have, the more it will come across in your writing. This is really important to create fun, interesting and engaging content which will soon have your readers coming back for more.

A Peek At Miss Issy's Blogging Briefly: 8 Titillating Tips

(Guest Post by Miss Issy) I have been blogging for years now. I'm a busy girl and I don’t need to spend a lot of time writing my articles. In fact, I finish an article in about 15 minutes. This very piece you are reading clocked in under 12 minutes. You've probably been told over and over and over again that content is king and you need to pay more attention to it, but I don't because I never, never compromise on the quality of my work. How do I do it?

1 – I keep a list of ideas – When inspiration strikes, jot it down in your notebook. Too many writers spend too much time THINKING about what to write. (Remember the advertising slogan 'Just Do It'?) Keep a list of ideas, and you will write faster and better!

2 – I let my ideas marinate in my (moleskine) notebook – let the topic stew in its own juices - you might also want to use your smartphone's voice recorder to add randowm thoughts on the subject matter - you'll be surprised at how easily you'll come up with new angles, interpretations and analyses!

3 – I edit BEFORE putting pencil to paper or stylus to phonescreen – cull the ideas you DON'T need from the meat of your topic. You shoul dbe able to write a finished article in UNDER 15 MINUTES!

4 – I use type fonts, bullets, eye tricks of any and many kinds to not only attract readers, but to entice them to linger on my page and lower my bounce rate in the process! Let's be truthful. Many readers have short attention spans. Fonts and bullets and coloured texts will hold their attention a wee bit longer! A lot of people are too lazy to read the entire essay. Short bullets will hold their attention for longer time.

5 – I make my articles SHORT - 500 words or less! And I stay ON TOPIC.

6 - Miss Issy PHOTOGRAPHS - I keep my smartphone in my purse or pocket. You never know when you might happen on something that will immediately either inspire you or stand out as a good image to associate with one of the articles you've been working on!

7 – Don't become a victim of "writer's block." If you get stuck, do what Miss Issy would do. Take a breather- work on something else. Inspiration will inevitably strike. Just have that notebook or smartphone handy when it does!

8 - Don't "Bank" or "Save" ideas - follow Miss Issy and release them freely - don't be afraid to tweet about your projects. The twitter timestap is all you need to prove that an idea is yours and not someone else's.

The Beginner`s Guide to Self Hosting Your Blog

If you are ready to dive in feet first and host your own blog, then this helpful set of instructions can help you to get going. Just be aware that things may be different if your set up in any way deviates from what is described below.

This of course assumes you have the server up and running. If you do not, then you should look at the conversion steps at the end of this piece.

Step 1: Get your IP address for a simple setup; this will be easy.
Go to Start->Programs->Accessories->Command prompt. Once the prompt opens, type in ipconfig and tap enter. You will now get a number. Copy it down exactly.
If you have a router, firewall, or any other device that gives you a private IP (one that starts with 192., 172., or 10.) then you will need to configure it to forward HTTP traffic to your server. Just use the manual, since configurations will vary based on your exact hardware and setup.

Step 2: Get a domain name and DNS services.
Buy your domain name anywhere, and then choose your DNS service. There are both paid and free services for this, so pick which ever suits you and install their software. It is worth mentioning that if your service provider uses dynamic IPs, then you will need a dynamic DNS management system.

Step 3: Files
If you have not already put your sites files onto the server, do so now. Be sure to organize them, and not just dump them all into one file; use the same organization you would for any site.
This also means installing your blog software. It is easiest to use Wordpress.org (not .com), which has a support community for self hosting. Since the installation process will vary slightly depending on your setup, this community is a great place to begin basic setup, and get help troubleshooting.

Now you have a self-hosted blog. Enjoy publishing!

You may have noticed earlier that I mentioned you could convert an old desktop to a small server for this job. If you are interested in finding out more about that procedure, then these resources can help you out. Best of luck.

Double check
Go to Start, then Run. Type in http://local host and tap enter. If you see a web page, you are already setup as a server. An error message means you aren't.

Configure a Server
Most versions of MS Windows have a Microsoft personal web server just waiting to be configured. Follow these steps.

Go to Control Panel->Add/Remove programs->Add/remove Windows components->Wizard opens->Check “Internet information services”->click “details”->check world wide web and documentation boxes (Front Page as well if you plan to use it)->Ok->Next

The wizard should take care of the rest. Just plug in the necessary information.

Yoani Sánchez's New Online Magazine is Blocked in Cuba!

(Global Voices) The online news magazine directed by Cuban blogger Yoani Sánchez, 14ymedio [es] (14 and a half), was launched today in the midst of controversy. Pay for facebook?

What if you were notified, either by facebook or by your cellphone company, that you were going to have to pay if you want to use your account on The Social Network. Oh and by the way, if your account is inactive more than 30 days it may be deleted and anyone else could come along and open a new account using your old facebook url.

Did you know that people in some developing nations, poor as they may be, are forced to pay to use facebook? That's like using small children to make clothes for Americans. It's not right!

YouTube Annotations Part 2 Add A Video Annotation With a Clickable Link to Your Website

Hey guys it’s Ileane from BasicBlogTips.com and today we’re going to continue our series about
getting more views on YouTube using Annotations. If you didn’t see the first video – we talked about InVideo programming.
Now today we’re going to get into putting annotations on individual videos.
There’s a few benefits of adding annotations to videos so let’s go over those real quickly:
  • One would be to get more subscribers on your channel
  • The other would be to get people to watch more of your videos - you know YouTube likes when we keep people on YouTube – so if you have videos that are related, you want to get people to check out the other videos on your channel
  • And more importantly for bloggers and website owners we want to get people to come back to our website
So let’s see how we can set up annotations to do those three things.
Go into your Video Manager and next to each one of your videos you’ll see “Edit” and you can add your annotations that way.
Another way we can access the annotations is right from the watch page of a specific video and the annotations are indicated by this little icon right here.
Here’s an example of an annotation that I set up on this video.
I put an overlay of the cover of this YouTube Report I did and when people click that link they go to a page where I have a sign up form for people to get the report and sign up for my email list. And come to think of it, by the way, if you want that report just go tohttp://basicblogtips.com/getyoutubereport

Now let’s go into YouTube and setup an annotation

The annotations interface is pretty simple. You come over here if you wanna add an annotation.Link To Your Blog From Youtube
Here’s the different options you have:
  • Speech Bubble
  • Note
  • Title
  • Spotlight and
  • Label
Most of the time you’re going to want to use one of these that will link back to something. So I recommend the
spotlight or the note, but you can experiment with all these to see which ones work best with your video and your content
Let’s keep it simple and add a note.
Now what you’ll see here is the timeline and this is the indication for where you want to place the annotation in video. Keep in mind
as I showed you in the previous video about InVideo programming you don’t wanna have too many calls to action at one specific spot in the video. Since I know that my InVideo programming is in the last 30 seconds of the video then I wanna keep any other annotations towards the beginning or the middle of the video.
So you’ll type in your message – you have choice of four different font sizes - the color of the text – and I would always just try to make it contrasting. It could be black or white but remember to not use black text on a black background or white on a white so use any of these other contrasting colors that will make the annotation standout then once you’ve done that this is where you get the choice to link to:
  • A video
  • One of your video playlists (that’s also an excellent idea)
  • Your YouTube channel
  • You can also link to your Google+ profile
  • Get people to subscribe to your channel 
  • If you have a fundraising project or
  • An associate website – and also
  • Merchandise
In this case we’re going to link to an Associated website and just so you know, the “Association” has to be set up in your YouTube settings before you can use your website link.
In my case I already have my blog “Basic Blog Tips” setup as my associated website. Real quickly – In order to
Get That Associated Website
Go into your channel settings under the Advanced tab – Associated Website is right here. You add in your name of your website and then you’ll get success – it will give you an option to approve that.
Once you’ve had annotations in place on a few videos, give it a few weeks, and then come over to your analytics. Go down to annotations – of course this is in beta  - and see how your annotations are performing. For ones that are doing well for you like I mentioned before – the spotlight and the notes do well for me so therefore I go back and I add more of those.

has worked up a great little guide to building a nice following on the image-based social media platform.

For those unfamiliar with the service, Pinterest is a visual discovery tool that people use to collect ideas for their different projects and interests. People create and share collections (called “boards”) of visual bookmarks (called “Pins”) that they use to do things like plan trips and projects, organize events or save articles and recipes. Pinterest allows users to save images and categorize them on different boards. They can follow other users' boards if they have similar tastes. The most popular categories include arts and crafts, home, style and fashion, and (of course) food!

A "board" is where the user's pins are located; users can have several boards for various items. A "pin" is an image that has either been uploaded or linked from a website. Once users create boards and add pins, other users can now "repin", meaning that they can "pin" one user's image to their board as well. Happy Pinning!
